Hi everyone, welcome to my Get Travel Fit website. Unsurprisingly, travel and fitness are my two passions in life and over the years I’ve purchased numerous books, products and equipment to help maintain my fitness whilst abroad and on the move.
I’ve been fortunate enough to have travelled to some of the most far-flung corners of the world, often finding myself without a gym or means to maintain my fitness levels. At the beginning, I was limited to going for a long jog or doing press ups on a hostel floor.
Over the years I’ve learnt a lot about strength and understanding power that’s helped me maintain and improve my athleticism whilst on the move. Now I want to give back and offer you some insight, as well as provide you with updated tips and techniques that even the pros use.
A Little Story About My Fitness Life.
Growing up I was always heavily involved in sport, whether it be Rugby, Rowing, Football, Tennis, Boxing…the list goes on. In fact I was struggling to fit it all in, until sadly I sustained a damaging injury during a rugby match that changed everything. I had broken my collar bone and was out of action for the next 8 weeks.
As a consequence I was afraid to return to rugby (my main sport) and my participation in the others dwindled. My fitness levels were in decline and I was keen to get active again. I discovered resistance training in the gym and immediately fell in love.
I literally used to spend hours in the school gym practicing the various techniques, that I had learnt from videos the night before. I began purchasing products online, so that I could continue my efforts at home, essentially building a ‘portable gym’. Now, 10 years on I’ve bought just about every product under the sun (well it feels like that sometimes) and have built up quite the arsenal of portable fitness tools.
At first there are obviously limitations to not working out in a ‘proper gym’. Although, you begin to realise that anything can be overcome and that a good work ethic and hard work can lead to your fitness success.
The Growth of Young Travellers.
The growth of the travel market is simply mind blowing. According to the World Youth Student and Education Travel Confederation, “By 2020, 320 million international trips are expected to be made by youth travellers each year, a staggering 47% increase from 217 million in 2013”.
This tells me that more and more people are leaving their comfort zone in search of new experiences and new horizons. I can certainly testify to this and can confidently say I’ve caught the travelling bug, like so many others.
Much of the content I will be discussing here is going to be centred around fitness techniques, that can be used anytime, anyplace, anywhere whilst you are travelling and on the move.
Travelling is becoming ever popular, habits are changing and so does the way you need to develop your fitness techniques.
Why Can’t Travelling and Keeping Fit Go Hand in Hand?!
There is no point going to the gym on a weekly basis, for months on end, making good progress with your strength to only throw it all away when you go travelling for 6 months. A lot can be accomplished, whilst abroad, with the right motivation and simple techniques.
These techniques will help you maintain and improve strength, endurance, physique and ultimately more confidence for those beach pictures.
If you ever need a hand or have any questions, feel free to leave them below and I will be more than happy to help you out.
All the best,
Founder of Get Travel Fit
